NCAST assessment tools were developed in the 1970s by Dr Kathryn Barnard and her research team at the University of Washington, Seattle.
Today at Browning House, NCAST's use forms a systematic assessment of the interaction between the child and their parent/carer during a routine and new situations, and provides an evidential base that assists in the decision-making process for children in child protection and care proceedings.
NCAST tools offer reliable observations enabling the planning of informed interventions and feedback to parents/carers, in order for them to understand their child's communications and to strengthen the relationship with their child. Within Browning House, parents/carers agree to be filmed for the NCAST assessments; Parents/carers are then given these DVDs to keep.
Browning House employs the only full-time NCAST instructor and practitioner in the UK and is therefore able to deliver in-house training at a time and venue to suit you. We also offer individual places for you to join the training of Browning House staff in Leeds.
NCAST training can be utilised by all professionals with a role in the decision-making process, plus all front line staff working with babies and young children in a range of settings: Social Care (Local Authorities), Children's Centres, Voluntary/Independent sector, Fostering and adoption, Health Visitors, Family Nurse Partnership, Residential Assessment Units, Mother & Baby Units and in Women's Prisons.
